How can you make sure that the pool is safe?
The pool should be surrounded by four-sided isolation fencing, at least five feet high, and equipped with self-closing and self-latching gates.

Is a pool cover or net safe
It's also important to remember that pool covers are not designed to prevent children from drowning.

When should my child start swimming lessons?
Wait until your child is four years old to start swimming lessons.  Children under age four are more likely to develop infections from swallowing too much water.

However, parents can get started earlier with classes in which kids keep their heads above water.  In either case, make sure that the instructor is certified by Red Cross or YMCA standards.

Never assume your child is "drown-proof." Even though your child may have learned to swim, she still needs constant supervision.

Boy pulled from pool has 'miracle' recovery, mom says
Amy Rex recounts the afternoon of Super Bowl Sunday when her son, Xander, was found drowning in a swimming pool. Xander, 3, is making a full recovery.

SAN CLEMENTE - It was the first sign that 3-year-old Xander was going to be OK and that the more than three minutes he spent without air did not damage his young brain. Two days after he was found head-down in a pool by his older brother, he was waking up in his hospital bed.

"What's your name?" his mother, Amy Rex, said Tuesday afternoon while he opened his eyes and started to reach for the medical tubes that extended from his body.

"Bono," Xander whispered. With his eyes still drowsy from medication, he was able to remember his nickname.

His mother later said:

Until you've had a child involved in a serious accident, you can never truly know what it’s like or how quickly it can happen. Children are innocent and UNPREDICTABLE and accidents can happen anywhere and at anytime and usually at a moment where you least expect it. Thank god something that could have been potentially tragic turned into a miracle.  It all happen in so quickly ,  the door ringed and just few minutes later my older son was screaming near the pool “MUM , MUM Xander is Dead”, it’s an experience of which I hope no one can re-live.

Drowning is the third leading cause of accidental death of children. Most drowning and near-drowning happen when a child accidentally falls into a pool or is left alone in the tub.

Drownings happen in a matter of seconds. Contrary to what many people believe, drowning is a quick and silent killer. In the time it takes to:

  • cross the room for a towel (10 seconds), a child in the bathtub can become submerged.
  • answer the phone (2 min), that child can lose consciousness.
  • sign for a package at your front door (4- 6 min), a child can sustain permanent brain damage.
